Rooted and Alive in Christ: An Easter Call from Colossians

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

(Col. 2:6-7)

In his letter to the Church in Colosse, Apostle Paul addresses threats to the early church during A.D. 60-62. He wrote it while in prison (Rome), emphasising the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. Today, these words in Colossians 2:6-7 remain a powerful call to not only move beyond a shallow faith, become deeply rooted, but also make us fully alive in Christ Jesus. Colossians is a Christ-centred letter urging believers to reject false teachings, stay rooted in the truth, live out their faith with maturity and gratitude, fully alive in Christ.

Why rooted in Christ?

In this fast-paced world of shifting values, shallow commitments, and spiritual confusion, many young people profess faith in Christ but lack the depth and stability to succeed spiritually. Thus, Paul in Colossians teaches us to discern false teachings, understand grace over legalism, navigate cultural pressure, and be accountable to the Community.

Paul’s words in Colossians 2:6-7 challenge us to go beyond surface-level Christianity and become deeply rooted and fully alive in Christ.

How can we be rooted and Alive in Christ?

Salvation: The Seed of Transformation: Just think of salvation as planting a seed of new life in Christ. Let us not view salvation as the last step; instead, as the initial planting of our faith; by embracing the process of growth, allowing Christ to cultivate and transform our lives from the inside out, just as seeds sprout from the soil and grow.

Deep Roots in Truth: Amidst the world’s noise, full of sceptics’ debates around the truth and its source–“The truth and my truth” and how this truth informs our ministry and belief. We should strive for a profound faith built on the solid foundation of truth found in Christ. Remember, the power of truth isn’t just in knowing it, but in living it out to experience true liberation.

Christ our Ultimate Foundation: Our identity and worth depend solely on who we are in Christ, not on temporary things. Ultimately, we can achieve this through consistently strengthening our faith by actively obeying God’s Word.

Live a thankful life: Cultivate a lifestyle of thankfulness, make gratitude a deliberate way of life, by taking time each day to reflect on God’s abundant goodness. This practice shields our hearts from bitterness and prevents spiritual drought.

Friends, this Easter, we reflect on the unparalleled love of Christ. The ultimate act of love; His destiny was the cross, His crime was love, His reason was me and you, His love for us will never fade (Romans 5:8). This profound sacrifice invites us to leave behind our former selves and embrace the new life offered through His resurrection. Staying close to Him is essential, for His very presence brings about true transformation (John 15:4).
